It’s been a strange year for comic book movies in 2023. Marvel, the studio that was once at the forefront of superhero fiction as well as general entertainment,

has had a difficult year despite two complete bombs (The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) and one enormous hit (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3).

Though it was the conclusion of a trilogy, Guardians couldn’t even be considered an absolute success because the franchise’s creator left Marvel to lead its biggest rival.

Things haven’t been great outside of Marvel either, but there is still one incredibly bright spot: comic book stories can still be brilliantly animated.

One of the most surreal and engrossing superhero films ever produced was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was surpassed by another comic book adaptation that didn’t center on superheroes.

For the following five reasons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was the best comic book movie of the year.

It has an entirely unique animation style.

The 2018 release of Into the Spider-Verse served as a crucial reminder that not all animated films had to have the same aesthetic as Pixar productions.

Mutant Mayhem appears to have taken note of this advice as well, choosing an extremely distinctive animation style that combines elements of the Spider-Verse with its own aesthetic.

The film is always visually appealing and adept at handling the hectic nature of its action sequences without letting things get too busy or confusing.

It has messy borders around each character that occasionally feel unfinished, and strong coloring applied to every scene and location.

There aren’t too many celebrity voice cameos in it.

The main cast of Mutant Mayhem includes a number of well-known actors and actresses, but four real children who play children make up the core group,

with support from Ayo Edebiri’s April O’Neil. Although Jackie Chan plays a fantastic Splinter, the focus of the film should rightfully be on the four teenagers who form its core.

You can concentrate on the characters your children are portraying rather than focusing on all the famous people at the microphones when you let them voice these characters.

Along the way, Mutant Mayhem develops interesting characters and offers up-and-coming talent an opportunity to shine.

Mutant Mayhem succeeds in being both exhilarating and healthy.

Thanks to excellent action and crisp animation, Mutant Mayhem also works surprisingly well as an action film. Whether the action takes place over an entire city or is a car chase where you have to follow multiple things at once, Mutant Mayhem makes the most of the freedom to place the camera anywhere in animation.

Mutant Mayhem, however, is more than just a taut action film—it’s a powerful tale about four teenage boys coming of age and discovering the world.

The main emotional conflict in the film revolves around Splinter’s willingness to allow the boys to mature, even though it means they might not always be close by.

All of the best elements of a fantastic action film and a moving coming-of-age tale are combined into one amazing pizza box-shaped package.

It maintains every aspect of the Turtles universe.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem may deviate from popular animation trends, but it also knows how to pay tribute to the characters it centers around.

The majority of the TMNT universe’s characteristics, such as the underground base and the love of pizza, are present here, even though Splinter serves as both the turtles’ trainer and a father figure.

The film takes great care to ensure that these four boys can be distinguished from one another, even though it clearly concentrates on a few turtles more than others.

Their distinct personalities and eccentricities are homages to the characters as originally envisioned in the comic books.

Mutant Mayhem is a stand-alone narrative.

While Across the Spider-Verse is an absolutely fantastic film, its biggest flaw is that it seems to end in the middle of the story.

Though it manages to devote nearly all of its attention to a single, more manageable story that fits neatly into a single film, Mutant Mayhem does leave room for possible sequels.

The turtles emerge from the shadows, realizing they possess the abilities to save those in their immediate vicinity. They make a new friend, defeat the antagonist, and patch things up with Splinter. It’s a heartwarming family tale that knows just when to end.
