Is James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 the best film ever?

In 1997, James Gunn’s cinematic career commenced with his screenplay for the low-budget Troma Studios production, Tromeo and Juliet.

His later screenplays included two live-action Scooby-Doo films, a reboot of Dawn of the Dead, and the lesser-known superhero film The Specials.

Finally given the opportunity to helm his debut film, Slither, in 2006, Gunn went on to leave his imprint on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy eight years later.

1. The 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy

Superman: Legacy will be directed by Gunn, who was named co-CEO of DC Studios late last year. Gunn’s most recent picture, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is his last project with Marvel Studios because of this.

It’s also a great chance to review Gunn’s entire filmography to date and arrange the films in order of lowest Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

6. Super in 2010

Given that Super, one of Gunn’s early films, is a bleak parody of comic book movies, it’s ironic that so many of his films have been superhero flicks.

Rainn Wilson plays Frank Darbo, a husband who spirals out of control after Sarah (Liv Tyler), his wife, marries Jacques (Kevin Bacon), who feeds Sarah’s drug habit.

Inspired by Nathan Fillion’s portrayal of The Holy Avenger, a TV superhero, Frank takes on a new identity as The Crimson Bolt and attempts to bring his morality from comic books to the real world.

Libby (Elliot Page), a female friend who first adopts Frank’s perverted ideology before turning into Boltie to fight alongside him, finds this appealing. However, in this tale, trying to fight crime without the aid of superpowers is a surefire way to fail.

Super can be streamed on AMC+ through Prime Video.

5. Vol. 3 of Guardians of the Galaxy (2023)

Before permanently joining DC Studios, Gunn’s most recent picture, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, served as his swan song at Marvel Studios.

In this sequel, Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) attacks Rocket (Bradley Cooper), severely injuring him. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and the other Guardians must battle Rocket’s insane creator, the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), in order to save his life. Additionally, Peter reunites with the version of himself that he loved very much, Gamora (Zoe Saldana).

At theaters right now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is showing.

4. The 2017 film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.

Peter and Rocket are at odds in the first Guardians sequel after Rocket unleashes the Sovereign’s wrath on the group.

The Guardians are further divided by the return of Peter’s father, Ego (Kurt Russell), and Gamora’s estranged sister, Nebula (Karen Gillan), who makes a deadly attempt to put an end to their rivalry.

However, Nebula and Yondu Udonta (Michael Rooker), Peter’s former Ravager leader, join forces with the Guardians to aid in the universe’s salvation as the truth about Ego’s motivations becomes apparent.

Disney+ is offering Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for streaming.

3. The 2006 film Slither

Gunn directed his first feature film, Slither, and you might recognize a few actors from his other films from this one. Wheelsy, South Carolina’s police chief, Bill Pardy, is portrayed by Nathan Fillion in the film.

An alien parasite infects a local man named Grant Grant (Michael Rooker), upending Pardy’s small town life. And as Grant starts to transform, he spreads the virus to other residents of the town.

Bill, Mayor Jack MacReady (Gregg Henry), Grant’s wife Starla (Elizabeth Banks), and Kylie Strutemyer (Tania Saulnier) eventually become the last remaining uninfected humans. And Grant is certain that he can still win Starla back, even with his horrific makeover.

Slither is available for purchase or rent at a number of digital retailers, including Prime Video.

2. The 2021 Suicide Squad

After he was abruptly fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Warner Bros. quickly signed Gunn to helm The Suicide Squad, a loose sequel to the first Suicide Squad film.

This film mainly follows a new team on a suicide mission in Corto Maltese; only Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Colonel Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) return for significant roles.

Waller uses blackmail to force Bloodsport (Idris Elba) to take command of a new group of soldiers that also includes Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Peacemaker (John Cena), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), and Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian). But this improvised team will have to step up and save the world because that is the true nature of their mission.

HBO Max offers streaming for The Suicide Squad.

1. The 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy

With Marvel’s first Guardians of the Galaxy film, which continues to be his highest ranked film on Rotten Tomatoes, Gunn’s career took off. In this origin tale, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot (Vin Diesel) attempt to take the Infinity Stone from Peter Quill before he can sell it.

Following their arrest and placement in space jail, the quartet teams up with Drax (Dave Bautista) in an attempt to break free and divide the money intended for the Stone.

To their astonishment, though, they form a strong bond and stick together to stop Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) from destroying the universe.

Disney+ offers Guardians of the Galaxy for streaming.
