In terms of movies, 2023 has been unlike any other year, and that’s a good thing in this case. The COVID pandemic years of 2020 and the majority of 2021 appear to have finally passed, and a wide range of well-received films have been released.

There have been plenty of films to watch and discuss, from the hilarious horror-comedy M3GAN to the animated adventure The Super Mario Bros. Movie to the phenomenon known as Barbenheimer.

Naturally, there’s always a chance that some strange film will get lost in the shuffle, and regrettably, when one of 2023’s best movies came out earlier this year, the public didn’t really get it.

However, there’s always a second chance to make up for missed opportunities and give films that were overlooked during their first run a proper go. In the case of the excellent mystery film

The Night of the 12th, this new digital release is a welcome way to watch one of the best mysteries of the year in the comfort of your own home. Here are a few justifications for watching it.

It’s a fantastic mystery that also touches on a significant topic.

The Night of the 12th begins with a suburban house party coming to an end and a lone, twentysomething woman named Clara strolling through the night. Soon after, Clara runs into a man in a mask who sprays her with lighter fluid, setting her on fire and killing her.

The remainder of the film centers on the investigation into Clara’s death, with two detectives—Yohan, who was just promoted, and Marceau, his more senior partner—questioning the girl’s friends, family, and boyfriends.

The suspect list keeps expanding as the movie goes on, and the case—which at first seemed straightforward and uncomplicated—becomes progressively more challenging and dismal.

Clara was killed by who? And why? Every good mystery film has a list of suspects that the viewer can select from, but Dominik Moll’s film excels because it honestly asks why so many people—especially men—have a plausible reason for brutally killing Clara.

Although it shouldn’t make sense that Clara’s lovers would hate women enough to commit such a heinous act, the tragedy of The Night of the 12th is that by the time it’s over, it looks far too likely that most of them could.

Moll also makes some veiled allusions to the way that insufficient funding for law enforcement can completely derail an investigation and put a murderer at large.

Beyond simple thrills, The Night of the 12th seeks to expose the broken justice system, the poisonous anti-feminist sentiment that is tolerated by a combination of denial and apathy, and the defective criminal justice system.

Sort of already, it won Best Picture.

The Night of the 12th is one of those foreign releases that has been available in other countries for a while already.

The French-language movie received great praise from critics when it was released in France last July after making its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022.

This year, when The Night of the 12th was nominated for ten César Awards—France’s version of the Academy Awards—that love continued.

The film took home an astounding six Césars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Moll, and Best Supporting Actor for the melancholic performance of Bouli Lanners.

The fact that a mystery film wins multiple awards shows how excellent The Night of the 12th is. Do you need more persuasion? On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently has a 95% critical score.

The ensemble is excellent.

Most likely, none of the actors from The Night of the 12th are well-known to you. That’s okay, since I love French movies and neither had I. However, you won’t likely forget them after seeing the film.

Bastien Bouillon does a fantastic job of capturing the growing frustration that comes with trying to solve Clara’s murder in his role as lead detective Yohan.

Yohan becomes overly attached to the case, and Bouillon does a good job of expressing his character’s growing desperation at the prospect that the case may never be solved.

Lanners steals every scene he’s in as Yohan’s older, but by no means wiser, partner Marceau. The disgruntled investigator reaches a breaking point as a result of his personal life collapsing and Clara’s investigation exposing him to a string of toxic men. Lanner deserves praise for skillfully capturing his character’s agony without going overboard.

The film features a setting that is rarely seen in thrillers.

The Night of the 12th isn’t your typical thriller, though, as it features an incredibly gorgeous setting that you would sell your family to move to. Known as the capital of the French Alps, Grenoble,

France, serves as the setting for the film. The location isn’t just there for pretty pictures; Moll uses it well to create a serene, lovely surface that conceals a violent undercurrent that is visible to anyone who bothers to look closely enough.

The stunning views of the mountains act as a sobering reminder to viewers that even this paradise has its share of evil people and that a happy ending is not always guaranteed, in stark contrast to the brutality of Clara’s murder. Regarding which…

The resolution is logical, surprising, and frustrating.

It’s challenging to discuss The Night of the 12th’s conclusion without giving away too much. The identity of the killer is a crucial plot point in almost every other thriller.

It’s the payoff the film requires and the resolution the audience longs for. The director accomplishes a remarkable feat as The Night of the 12th draws to a close by convincing us that the reveal of the killer isn’t really that significant.

That isn’t the intention of his film, at least not in the traditional sense. Instead, it aims to be more than just a simple thriller; it’s a somber drama about life’s randomness,

a satirical take on the tedious bureaucracy of law enforcement, and a poignant portrayal of individuals caught in a destructive cycle of fixation with the past.

What ultimately distinguishes and appeals to audiences about The Night of the 12th is that it is a satisfying murder mystery in addition to being all of these things. Since I don’t believe anyone has ever made them this way, I can’t say for sure that they do not exist anymore.

The Night of the 12th’s enduring legacy is its independence. That alone is more than enough motivation to watch and appreciate it in a time of ceaseless reboots, sequels, and franchises.

There are several digital retailers where you can buy or rent The Night of the 12th, such as Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, and others.
